Amazon is poised to generate a big boost in employment with the announcement of its plan to build a new multibillion-dollar hub in Northampton, which promises more than 2,000 jobs.
The tech giant’s so-called distribution center is expected to start taking orders in 2026. When created, the development is expected to generate 1,400 jobs, and this figure is expected to exceed 2,000 within three years of operation.
The site will offer a variety of positions, ranging from engineers and HR professionals to IT experts, health and safety advisors, financial specialists, and operational staff responsible for preparing, packing, and shipping visitor orders. The company revealed that the new facility will be a distribution center, with three floors of robot generation to purchase products and process visitor orders with high-tech efficiency.
Louise Wall, chief executive of the Northamptonshire Chamber of Commerce, said: “Amazon’s investment in Northamptonshire will create thousands of new jobs in one of the most complex buildings of its kind in the world. SEGRO Logistics Park Northampton and the importance of our region’s role in the UK logistics industry.
Neil Travis, Amazon’s Regional Director, said: “The East Midlands is a vital region for Amazon, with more than 6,000 small and medium-sized business partners, and I’m very pleased to see our continued commitment with this £500 million investment in a new distribution centre in Northampton.
“The new site will create more than 2,000 new jobs, bringing our total in the East Midlands to more than 10,000 full- and part-time positions, and our investment in the region to more than £4 billion since 2010. Amazon continues to invest in our state-of-the-art structures and technologies to provide our workers with some of the most complex workplaces of their kind in the world, ensuring their well-being and fulfilling the wishes of our customers.
Amazon says it has invested more than £56 billion in the UK since 2010.
