Amazon to build $400 million distribution at former state fairgrounds in Detroit

DETROIT – A proposed land sales at the former Detroit Exhibition Park will be changed to a $400 million Amazon distribution center, Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan on Tuesday.

Waiting for City Council’s approval for the 142-acre land north of State Fair Avenue near Woodward and Eight Mile, which Duggan says is worth $9 million, a new facility would be built until 2022.

In addition, the agreement does not offer “tax incentives or rebates” for the company, Duggan said.

The new facility will create 1,200 new jobs paid for at $15.00 per hour. In addition, the new deal will pay another $7 million for a new transit center in Woodward that could provide an internal standby domain to serve some of the 30,000 transit users using the region’s bus routes.

If the City Council approves the new plan, the structure of the new plan will begin last October. As with other construction projects starting in Detroit, the company that builds them will get lists of possible painters who can simply paint on the premises.

Before the city bought the site for $7 million, it was used as the main location of the Michigan State Fair, which ended in 2009. Since then, it has been largely vacant again.

More recently, the site was used as Detroit’s primary location for COVID-19 driving tests. Duggan said that when temperatures dropped, the site would move closer to the city center.

The deal, which was secured through the real estate company The Sterling Group, took more than a year to complete.

The latest detail of the new assignment includes a pilot program from the Academy of Entrepreneurship Training for aspiring entrepreneurs to create their own jobs.

“Detroit at Work is pleased to expand our education with the preparation of micro and small businesses,” said Nicole Sherard-Freeman, executive director of Workforce Development and Detroit At Work. “The Academy has been on our radar for some time because many Detroit residents have the drive and creativity for small business owners and have asked for our help. Amazon’s potential presence in Detroit can help Detroit’s network of small businesses grow. This is good news for all budding entrepreneurs. »
