Detroit: Amazon sees the former Michigan State Fairgrounds as a potential location for a primary distribution center that would, according to the city, create 1,200 jobs.
Mayor Mike Duggan announced Tuesday the sale of 142 acres of the former Eight Mile and Woodward Exhibition Park. Developers and property investors Hillwood Investment Properties, along with Sterling Group, plan to buy the land for $9 million, the estimated value.
The organization plans to invest more than $400 million in the entire allocation and also plans to redevelop the remaining 70 acres with auto portion providers or other employers.
If Detroit City Council approves the plan through mid-September, Amazon plans to have shovels on the floor until the end of October to create an installation of approximately four million square meters of space, according to Detroit officials. The agreement requires staff to earn a minimum of $15 according to the benefit hour.
The allocation will be financed through the personal sector, the use of tax exemptions or other monetary incentives, Duggan said.
“It’s revolutionary,” the mayor said. “This city has never built a new construction for $400 million without tax exemptions or incentives. An Amazon site in Detroit would be registered for nine other Amazon sites in the Detroit Metropolitan Domain in operation, under structure, or in project.

Hillwood Investment Properties, founded in Texas, has built Amazon distributions across the country. The developers said they were attracted to because it would make a difference in the community.
“We see this as an opportunity to partner with Sterling Group to demonstrate our company’s on-site skill in a new center of innovation and excellence in e-commerce,” said Ross Perot Jr., president of Hillwood and Perot Group. He is the son of Ross Perot, the vanquished businessman who ran unsuccessfully for the presidency of the United States in 1992 as an independent.
Developers will pay the cost of any demolition and environmental remediation to prepare the ground for remodeling. The historic buildings of the exhibition park will most likely be demolished and COVID-19 checkpoints move inland during the winter, Duggan said.
“The truth is that they will be demolished, ” he said. “When I was a kid, we saw the circus at the State Fairgrounds, we all have emotional bonds. But in the last 10 years, no single user has been able to use these old farm buildings in a way that follows a business plan. “
The assignment was approved Tuesday through 3 board members, adding Roy McCalister, whose community includes the FairGrounds heritage.
