Expanding expanders and private real estate investors have agreed to expand 142-acre assets by more than $16 million on the city’s official website.
Amazon is recently negotiating with Hillwood Investment Properties to be the first senior tenant to occupy the land with a 3.8 million-acre construction that would generate about 1,200 jobs that would provide a minimum wage of $15 an hour to the area, according to the city.
“What Detroit wants more than anything right now is jobs, and we are deeply grateful that Hillwood and Sterling Group have chosen our city to buy the former Michigan State Fairgrounds, which can create more than 1,200 well-paying jobs.” Detroit Mayor Duggan said Tuesday in a statement.

Of the $16 million investment in Hillwood and Sterling, $7 million would go into the Detroit Department of Transportation transit.
Construction of the assignment can begin as early as October if Detroit City Council approves plans through September, and Amazon’s distribution center can open as soon as 2022.

“This proposed State Fair Grounds deal for sale is a great opportunity, only for District 2 and the City of Detroit, but for the unification of southeastern Michigan,” Councilman Roy McCalister said in a statement. “The prospect of 1,200 Amazon jobs in this new facility represents an opportunity to diversify our economy while employing citizens of our city.
He added that he hoped Amazon’s new progression would “be a primary employer as well as a dynamic educational floor for Detroit staff in the coming years.”

The property, which hosted the state fair from 1905 to 2009, was deserted for more than a decade. Several failed progression projects have come and go since Michigan Governor Jennifer Granholm reduced investment for the state fair in 2009 to focus on other local Projects in the Great Recession, The Detroit News reported.
Duggan said at a press conference tuesday that he hoped some existing historic buildings, such as the Colessium Hertel, would be demolished as a result of the project, at the point of sale.

“I think they’ll probably all be knocked down,” Duggan said. “We all have emotional ties, yet in the last 10 years, no single user has been able to figure out how to use these old farm buildings in a way that follows a business plan.
