Amazon Games has laid off 180 workers from the Crown Channel and the Game Growth team. Discounts are part of a larger goal to earn more in Prime Gaming.
Amazon Games has shown the layoffs to Aftermath. ” We’ve listened to our consumers and know that giving them free games every month is what they need most. That’s why we’re refining our Prime merit to focus more on this sector. “Christoph Hartmann, vice president of Amazon Games, said in an email to employees.
He continued: “These adjustments to our business are accompanied by adjustments to our resources, which resulted in the elimination of just over 180 positions. Crown Channel is one of Amazon’s channels on Twitch, which focuses on ad-supported original programming.
Layoffs have been commonplace in the video game industry this year, as well as at Bungie and BioWare. This is Amazon’s first wave of layoffs in 2023. Earlier this year, Amazon laid off about 100 workers in its gaming division. However, the company is still committed to creating games in-house.
Earlier this year, Bloomberg reported that Crown Channel wasn’t as popular as Amazon claimed and was artificially inflating its viewership figures. Currently, Amazon Games continues to work on Lost Ark and New World, as well as creating a new Lord of the Rings MMO.
