A new Apple laboratory in China for products in excessive conditions

Apple is set to open a new studio lab in Shenzhen, China, focusing on the quality and reliability of its flagship products (via Shenzhen Daily).

The new Shenzhen lab is expected to study Apple’s capabilities, focusing on reliability and quality testing of key products. The new facility will focus on testing new fabrics and production techniques, ensuring that products like the iPhone, iPad and Apple Vision Pro can withstand even excessive conditions, ranging from strenuous physical activity to excessive temperatures. The lab’s preparation comes at a very important time, as Apple ramps up production of its iPhone 16 line, expected to launch in the fall.

The selection of Shenzhen is due to its proximity to many of Apple’s suppliers. Apple first announced its plans for the new lab in March. Despite diversifying its production capacity to other countries such as Viet Nam and India, China remains a key production hub for Apple. The new Shenzhen facility is part of a wider expansion, including study and development centers in Beijing, Shanghai and Suzhou. Apple has invested more than 1 billion yuan (about $138 million) in the facility.

Bloomberg reports that Apple’s chief operating officer, Jeff Williams, recently traveled to Shenzhen to discuss investment and collaboration plans. He reportedly highlighted the role Shenzhen plays in Apple’s market strategy. Williams’ stop in China also included meetings with senior Chinese officials in Beijing, a stop at an Apple Store in the Wangfujing district to buy groceries, watch a movie shot with the iPhone 15 Pro Max and a meeting with entertainment company Migu, which showed off its app developed for the Apple Vision ProArray.
