Plans have been announced to build a new main film and television production facility in Newark between Weequahic Park and Newark Liberty International Airport.
Gov. Phil Murphy, who signed a law 4 years ago restoring the tax credit program for New Jersey movies, noted that Thomas Edison invented cinema in New Jersey.
“Not only are we committed to making film and television production a critical driving force of our economy, we are actively restoring our historic site to make it a world-class place,” he said Tuesday.
Great Point Studios, a studio investment and control corporation that specializes in film and television infrastructure, and the New Jersey Performing Arts Center are partnering with Lionsgate, a global content corporation, on the project.
The governor said Garden State surpassed $500 million in investment in film and television production last year, a total that is expected to continue to grow.
“We are committed to working with the industry for mutual expansion and benefit,” he said.
He noted that Newark’s allocation will create “several hundred new long-term jobs, with a priority, I should add, for Newark residents, and the annual profit is expected to exceed $800 million. “
He said there is a massive demand for giant sound stages in the Northeast, due to the way TV and videos are filmed.
“We get weekly calls from production groups asking not only about our incentive programs, but also where there are potential study spaces,” he said.
The governor said New Jersey provides diversity, excellent union skills and incentives, and several other production studios are being built in New Jersey, in addition to a huge one that is expected to be built in Bayonne.
“Film production becomes frankly our ‘if we build it, they’ll come for a while. ‘Newark and New Jersey are all in our foreground position.
Newark Mayor Ras Baraka described the assignment as a “monumental victory” for his city and noted that it will “bring many new jobs, create new educational opportunities for our students, and revitalize the revitalization of the South Ward. “
Great Point Studios will own the 12-acre, 300,000-square-foot full-service entertainment complex.
The facility will be built near Newark Liberty International Airport and operations are expected to begin in late 2024.
It will include production stages ranging from 20,000 to 30,000 square feet, offices, area and parking for 400 cars and 65 trucks. scenography, restoration, on-site catering, cleaning and security service.
NJPAC will manage the public affairs and network for the study and create educational systems and internships for the best schools and school academics in Newark.
