Ribs are one of Kim Laidlaw’s favorite cookbook things to make in a slow cooker, and they’re a must-have on a cold winter’s day.
In his cookbook, “Everyday Slow Cooker: Modern Recipes for Delicious Meals,” Laidlaw offers several other rib recipes and recommends them for a meal with other sides.
“If you make them in a slow cooker, the meat may not get in the way,” he told Business Insider. “Then you can focus on other sides like polenta or risotto. “
Beef, turkey, or poultry stew is the ultimate bone-friendly meal during the cold winter and fall months.
“Beef stew is smart in the slow cooker,” Laidlaw said. “It’s anything I grew up with in the slow cooker, and it’s just as smart today. “
But the stew is no problem.
“Slow cookers are wonderful in winter for soups and stews,” Laidlaw said. “The component is that you can set it up in the morning and approve again. “
If you make this soup in the fall, you can use fresh, seasonal corn, as recommended in this celebrity-approved recipe via Martha Stewart, discovered on the chef’s website.
However, you can also take the simplest way out by opting for store-bought canned corn. The soup is flavorful yet mild and uses comforting ingredients like heavy cream, bacon, and red potatoes.
Laidlaw’s recipe of slow-braised beef brisket, garlic, onion, dry red wine, carrot, and poultry or beef broth, with chimichurri sauce.
“Beef brisket is an herbal addition to the slow cooker, as gentle braising makes it melt,” Laidlaw writes in “Everyday Slow Cooking. “
“The ribs work really well in the slow cooker, and you can put them under the broiler at the end to make them crispy,” Laidlaw told BI.
“Bolognese is wonderful because it can be cooked for a long time,” Laidlaw said. “Just don’t forget that the sauce doesn’t evaporate in the same way as if you made it on the stovetop. You should definitely compensate and put less liquid in the pot if you’re a slow cooker. “
Celebrity chef Martha Stewart’s slow cooker mac and cheese recipe is not only easy to make, but also super delicious and great for the fall and winter seasons.
“It’s about using stinky cheeses, like sharp cheddar, combined with a little gruyere or pecorino romano for an extra kick, because the white sauce and pasta will absorb a lot of flavor,” Stewart writes.
Hugh Acheson’s Slow Cooker Chicken Broth is pretty simple: all you need is total chicken, salt, garlic cloves, white onions, carrots, celery, and a few seasonings to taste.
You can find the full recipe for Acheson’s poultry broth in his ebook “The Chef and the Slow Cooker. “
“A soup with Thai chili peppers, coconut milk and lime is just delicious,” Acheson said.

Acheson points out that not only are meatballs, like the veal meatballs he includes in his book, easy and delicious to make, but they’re a comforting, kid-friendly option you can make in a slow cooker.
“Slow cookers are necessarily the most productive tool for cooking on their own; they work much better to feed an entire family,” he said.
“I decide anything that doesn’t take too much time,” Acheson said. “I usually have lentil soup with Tuscan kale and a little sour cream and herbs on top. To me, that’s the kind of food you need when you’re watching the snow fall. »
The recipe for Acheson’s lentil soup with Tuscan kale can be found here on Cup of Jo.
Acheson also notes that the amounts of soup are ideal for the next day.
One of the benefits of a slow cooker is that you start with a base protein and season it up.
From Mexican-inspired spices to Indian stewed sauces, there are plenty of tactics to turn braised or shredded poultry dishes into anything mind-blowing.
This recipe from Delish teaches you how to make fried fish with shredded poultry in the slow cooker.
“One dish that I find very flexible is red meat shoulder in a slow cooker with broth and a little salt and pepper,” Laidlaw said. “I’m just braising this and then I’ll be able to turn it into a lot of other things. “
Laidlaw explained that through a red meat palette you can make everything from shredded red meat burgers to carnitas tacos or burritos.
“The leg of lamb is so clever that it breaks down in the slow cooker,” Acheson said. “Cooking in the slow cooker and then topping it up in some other way will ensure that the meat is at its best. Whether it’s browning the meat removing it or throwing it under the grill, you may need to think of other steps to finish your meal. “
Laidlaw added: “Recipes that put everything in without any prior preparation are just as clever and tasty as those that do. Taking ten minutes to brown the meat before putting it in or starting with the onions is a long way. more delicious foods.
“It’s about rethinking recipes and figuring out how to make them in the slow cooker,” Acheson said.
One of the “best recipes” Acheson said he uses in his e-book is for a braised catfish stew, the recipe for which can be found at Garden.
“It has a beautiful, long-cooking broth that in the end is just a vision,” he told Business Insider. “It’s got chili peppers, bell peppers, and mace — great flavors. It works perfectly. When simmering, you need to choose a dish that can cook well over low heat throughout the day. “
“Today, goat shoulder doesn’t have that game-like flavor that it might have had before,” Acheson said. “When you’re talking about cooking a large piece of meat, a slow cooker is a great place to start. “
One of the desserts Laidlaw includes in his book “Everyday Slow Cooking” is ginger brandy cheesecake, which would be ideal as a gift on a cold day or even as a festive dessert.
